Members Night with Vikarious

VIKARIOUS (acoustic pop/funk) have been on the Cairns music scene for the last two years, playing many of the popular live venues between Port Douglas, Mission Beach, the Tablelands area, and returning from their second 'mini tour' in New Zealand to play for us at the Amphitheatre.

Their repertoire spans the ages, with contemporary tunes and some old favourites, including covers by Ben Harper, John Mayer, Foo Fighters, James Brown, Prince, and Stevie Wonder, to mention a few.

Elias Wright fronts the line up on vocals and percussion backed by the choppy acoustic style of Zdenek Styk on guitar and keyboards. Both Elias and Zdenek have a wealth of experience between them, and the youthful energy and spontaneity of Elias is grounded by the skill and maturity of Zdenek lending the duo a dynamic solid fluidity.

We welcome back favourites Elias, Zdenek, with Josiah Rusch, and Will Kepa and guest artists. You’ll love this gig, and Vikarious will have you dancin’ the night away, so come together with your fellow members and friends, and enjoy our first Understage gig for 2010.

Al Di Meola with World Sinfonia

Legendary guitarist, Al Di Meola is bringing his 6-piece Latin Jazz Fusion band World Sinfonia to the Kuranda Amphitheatre on Tuesday 16th March, 2010. Opening the concert, with a 30 min set is Christian Hemara, from Newcastle. The talented 21 year old, of Irish/Maori/Portuguese and Italian descent will be supporting at the Amphitheatre, as well as the Byron Bay and Bellingen concerts. He is a solo act - vocalist and acoustic guitar, with an incredible voice! And complements Al's instrumental band beautifully.

Jesse Kuch, Timeout, Cairns Post, "This is the most amazing gig to come to Cairns in years. I cannot say enough how much this man is one of the greatest living guitarists in the world today and an inspiration to countless generations of music lovers! Bring it on!"

One of the most prominent virtuosos in the contemporary instrumental jazz field, Al Di Meola’s dazzling technique on both acoustic and electric guitars is unmatched, extending to fluid arpeggios flying at breakneck speed and beautiful, slow vibrato-laden melodies. Provocative and enchanting, Al Di Meola’s intriguing union of complex rhythms, lyrical melodies and sophisticated harmonies ensures an unforgettable aural sensation.

Al Di Meola finds inspiration in music cultures across the world including sounds from Argentina, Brazil, Israel and the Mediterranean and in acoustic genres such as flamenco and the tango. The depth of his writing along with the soulfulness of his guitar expression have won this guitar virtuoso legions of fans worldwide, having played over many years to sell out shows across Europe, Canada and his native USA.

Of Al Di Meola, Guitar historian Robert Lynch said: “In the history of the electric guitar, no one figure has done more to advance the instrument in a purely technical manner than Al Di Meola. His total command of the various styles and scales is simply mind-boggling.”

Al Di Meola's highly celebrated career has spanned a wide range of emotions into a unique style embodying the artist’s world inspired influences. From the velocity and heat of his early solo efforts to the challenge and triumph of the "Di Meola / McLaughlin / De Lucia (Guitar Trio)", from the Brazilian explorations of "Cielo e Terra" and "Soaring Through A Dream" to the global romanticism and Tango inflection of Al's acoustic group "World SInfonia" (self titled debut) and the 2nd "World Sinfonia" recording, Heart of the Immigrants.

1980 marked the triumph of the acoustic guitar trio with Paco De Lucia and John McLaughlin and their debut album Friday Night in San Francisco, sold more than two million units. The virtuoso guitarists toured from 1980 to 1983, releasing the studio album Passion, Grace & Fire in 1982, and in 1995, they reunited for a third recording, Guitar Trio, followed by another triumphant world tour.

In early 1996, Di Meola formed a new trio with the violinist Jean-Luc Ponty and RTF bandmate Stanley Clarke called The Rite of Strings. Al reunited with the original members of Return To Forever, keyboardist Chick Corea, bassist Stanley Clarke, and drummer Lenny White, for a world tour in 2008 that was one of the biggest jazz events of the year.....

But for now Al’s main focus remains with World Sinfonia: “I’m more interested now in moving forward with the World Sinfonia, which has really developed into something beautiful. For me, it’s the most rewarding thing I’ve done in a long, long time. You don’t have the overbearing volume with this band. Instead you have a rich harmonic kind of music with lots of improvisation; you have a music that is emotional. What I’m doing now is just completely satisfying, like a phenomenal meal and a great glass of vintage wine.” Di Meola has further expanded his world music vocabulary after touring Morocco with World Sinfonia.

The Latin Jazz Fusion band World Sinfonia features musicians from Argentina, Cuba and Israel, with Gumbi Ortiz on percussion, Fausto Beccalossi - accordion & vocals, Kevin Seddiki - guitar, Victor Miranda - double bass, and Peter Kaszas - drums. Al Di Meola World Sinfonia will enthrall the audience at the Amphitheatre.

Guaranteed to be a unique experience, and may we be blessed with a star lit night to enjoy the ambience of the open-air, grass terraced, Kuranda Amphitheatre. Bring along a comfy seat (fold chair), or a blanket/rug, a friend, a bite to eat from the Amphitheatre kitchen, relax, and enjoy a night to remember…
